Our Bee Discovery Centre

The Bee Discovery Centre is a fully accessible site, situated by a river, on the edge of the Old Hale Way Allotments. We welcome arranged visits between May and September from local schools, youth organisations, such as Rainbows, Brownies, Beavers and Cubs, and other youth and adult community groups.

We have a modern sustainable off-grid facility . Sessions are run both indoors as well as outdoors in our bee friendly garden.

Our live apiary honey producing apiary allows visitors to safely view the bees at work close up.

Many groups return year after year to enjoy this unique learning experience.

“I really liked going to Buzzworks and enjoyed the session. It was a good day.“

A learning journey

The Discovery Centre has an exhibition in six chapters which explains the fascinating world of the honey bee, and there is a live apiary to give a close-up view of honey bees at work. We also have a 50in digital TV and a digital microscope, which make the learning experience more fun and enjoyable.

Bee school

In our bee school we show our visitors the importance of bees and pollination for our own food as well as for wildlife. Our host will give a talk that reveals the life of the honey bee; their habitat, life cycle, plant pollination, nectar collection and honey production. We also explain why their survival is at risk and what we can all do to help.

Bee activities

A courtyard with tables provides both a place to picnic and an outdoor classroom for activities such as flower pressing, honey-tasting and candle making.

A bee-friendly garden is planted with flowers and vegetables that need bees and the site also supports a small number of bee hives. These not only produce honey for our market stall, but can observed from the shelters and on some occasions used to give visitors the experience of looking inside a beehive.

“Thanks for helping to arrange the visit this evening. It was very informative and the Scouts certainly seemed to enjoy it. I've rarely seen them all so attentive!”
